Research, National and International Relations

Scientific work in the Institute of Communication Engineering is carried out in the following areas. The first area comprises research and development activity which is being done in co-operation with partner companies. The joint projects are financed by grants gained in competitions. In the past few years the Institute has successfully applied for acquiring financial support from various sources. Projects made by the Institute and submitted to the Communication Funds have brought us more than HUF 200 million, and a significant amount out of the above sum has been spent on building the Accreditation Laboratory approved by the Communication Supervisory Office. Since 1988 we have had the possibility of applying for some fund of a limited competition on invitation basis.

The Foundation for Higher Education in Telecommunications and Telematics provides an annual support of HUF 16 million for the research carried out in the Institute. A more modest but regular grant of an annual HUF 2 million has been provided by Westel for five years. In the past, too, we made up projects with which we successfully applied for grants to the Catching up with European Higher Education Fund, to the OMFB (State Office for Technical Development) to the Foundation for Hungarian Higher Education and Research. The assessments of our applications have always been favourable and have highly acknowledged the R&D activity of our institute.

The second area of research has focused on the education content and on the improvement of methodology. The Institute started using digital and electronic devices for preparing teaching materials. Projectors have been purchased, presentation materials for teaching various subjects and video recordings for distance learning have been and are being prepared. To promote the efficiency of education we have made provisions by establishing studios, such as Video Studio, Acoustic (for dubbing) Studio and Multi Media Workshop.

We have also been elaborating CD-ROM and network access teaching aids. Assisted by the facilities and financial Support of MATÁV (Hungarian Telecommunication Company) Education Directory Board a specialist training on video conference basis has been offered. International relations have also contributed to the improvement of education. The academic staff has a close contact with a wide range of foreign universities and colleges. (Lille University, ARCADA Polytechnic Helsinki, University of Zaragosa, Middlesex University London, Czech Technical University of Prague, Suez Canal University, University of Central Lancashire etc.) The third area of our activity and international relations is to promote the students' research and study exchange (including teachers' exchange).

Through TEMPUS, SOCRATES and ERASMUS projects our students can do part of their studies (one or two semesters) at partner institutions abroad and, similarly, foreign students are received here for mainly in the final year of their studies to do field practice or to plan their theses. For some years we have organised Summer University for Hungarian students living over the borders of Hungary. Furthermore, our students have successfully presented papers at Students' Conferences or participated in competitions with their theses. The Act of Vocational Training having been modified earlier this year has allowed the companies and firms to give part of their contribution directly to institutions of higher education. This is an additional form of financial sources from which we can benefit in our endeavours to expand and widen our relations with the purpose of raising the standard of training already highly acknowledged.
